Easy No Sew Spring Napkins

Easy No Sew Spring Napkins

Living in Michigan, there may still be clumps of snow outside…but spring napkins are about to hit inside.  Today I am pulling out all the spring decor and starting to think about Easter!  Easter is one of my favorite holidays. I love celebrating the death and resurrection of our Savior!

On Easter, we are gone most of the day at church and celebrating with family, but this year I thought it would be really fun to make a special breakfast.  I did something like this at Christmas and the kids really enjoyed it.  Especially my girls who loved drinking out of the “fancy” glasses!

Deciding To Make Spring Napkins

I headed out to the store, with my daughter, to find spring decorations for the table.  The stores were flooded with adorable spring decor.   I wanted to buy pretty much everything I looked at, yet the goal was not to spend a lot.  The decision was hard, but I finally decided to make some spring napkins to decorate our table.  I started looking through the spring fabric to make my own napkins and ended up buying some material I really liked.

However, when I got home….I wasn’t as excited about the fabric.  I like pastels…but I don’t normally decorate with them and the fabric I bought for the napkins just wasn’t right.  All the spring decor kinda swept me up and I forgot to focus on my style and what would work in my house (plus it didn’t help that I was in a hurry).

I don’t like wasting things or buying things I don’t need, but I did and I knew the fabric wasn’t right.  It didn’t cost much, so I just folded the fabric back up and put it aside.

I headed to the basement to search through my leftover fabric.  I don’t do much sewing…so my supply was pretty limited.  However, just when I was starting to loose hope, I found a small stack of extra fabric from the kitchen curtains I made a while back.  It was perfect, exactly what I wanted!  This fabric would make amazing spring napkins!

Making the Spring Napkins

To start, I lined up the fabric on the table and taped it down.

I actually use the seam of the table as a cutting guide!  It helps me cut straight.

I used a ruler and cut the fabric into 14 x 14 inch squares.

Once the first napkin was cut, to make it easier, I just used it as a template to cut the rest out.

It only took a few minutes to cut all six napkins out.

Now to fray the edges.

I use a straight pin to pull a few strands out at a time.

I continued until the edge was frayed to my liking.  Then worked my way around the remaining three edges of the napkin.

Some materials are easier to fray than others…this material happens to be duck cloth and frayed really easily.  It also happens to be dry clean only fabric.  However, my mother and I have made napkins several other times with similar fabrics and they have always cleaned up just fine.  We hand wash them and if you only use them for occasions now and again, it shouldn’t be a problem.  If you wanted to make napkins for everyday, take that into consideration when choosing your fabric.

*Note: If you the napkins often, to prevent additional fraying you can use a sewing machine to run a stitch around the edge, just inside the fraying.  If you only use them once or twice a year, they should be fine without stitching.

Apparently fraying napkins is so fun, I gained some helpers.

It didn’t take long and my napkins were complete!

We gathered all the leftover strings, which looked so cool.  I kept them!  I will have to figure out somewhere else to use them.

My napkins are now ready for my Easter Breakfast.  To finish the look, I printed off tags and tied them with twine.

I love how they turned out!  It will be special that two of the kids helped make the napkins too.

  • Just wondering, do you have any problems with continual fraying, especially after they are washed? They are really cute, and easy enough for me to do, thanks!

    • So far we haven’t had any big problems with extra fraying. It is possible for them to fray a little more over time. However, if you use them only for special occasions, you should be fine.
