How To Make An Easy Sight Word Folder
Spring has hit and it is amazing how fast the rest of the school year flies! It always seems like spring schedules get so busy and it is harder to stay consistent with school work. My middle daughter is in first grade and we have been working really hard on her sight words all year. We want her to finish the year strong, so it is not time to throw our hands in the air quite yet (OK that is a little pep talk to myself). In order to help us stay consistent in the spring, I will show you how to make an easy Sight Word Folder.
I saw this great post Sight Word Mastery in 10 Minutes a Day on the blog The Organized Homeschooler! The idea of saying a word six times for mastery and the fun of moving the words forward each time you get it right. I knew my daughter would love it and it would add a little more excitement than just flipping through the flashcards. So here we go!

Sight Word Folder
I started by grabbing a teal folder, because if you haven’t noticed it’s my favorite color. I also grabbed a couple of envelopes.
I bought my folders on Amazon here:
PENDAFLEX COLORED FILE FOLDERS
Then cut the envelopes almost in half, to make pockets. They were cut one and a half inches from the bottom.
Next I cut the strips of envelopes into two inch wide pieces and laid them out on the folder.
The folder has 6 small pockets and then one larger pocket for when the words are mastered. Once I figured out where I wanted them, I used a glue stick to adhere them. To add a little color I grabbed my box of Washi Tape and trimmed the edges. Washi Tape isn’t the best to fasten the edges down, so make sure you glue them or use double sided tape to really seal them.
I trimmed the edges of all the pockets.
Now to add the numbers. I made up a quick word document with all the labels.
Then cut them out…
and glued them onto all the pockets.
My daughter’s teacher sends home small sight word flashcards, so that is why we made the pockets so small. If you have larger sight word flashcards, you can make the pockets bigger or buy library card pockets like below.
We already started using it and my daughter was so excited! She loved moving the flashcards up a level.
I created a simple label on the front because next year my youngest will be in Kindergarten and I can’t wait to use this system with her too!
This is the perfect system to help your child master all their sight words. Plus it makes it more fun than flashcards alone!
