Easy Valentine Heart Cookies
As a child, every year I loved getting a beautifully decorated giant heart cookie from my Mom on Valentine’s Day! Our family is definitely a cookie family…at any moment, any one of us could whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies. So what better way than to take our favorite thing…homemade chocolate chip cookies and make them into giant hearts! Plus practice makes perfect, right? Let’s just say we get a lot of practice.
Anyways….when I had kids, I knew this was one tradition I definitely wanted to continue! So here we go, I’ll walk you through step by step how I make them.
Step 1: Make Chocolate Chip Cookie dough
I always use the Nestle Toll House Chocolate Chip Recipe…however, I make a few adjustments. Instead of two sticks of butter, I use 1 stick and 1/2 cup Butter flavored shortening.
I also always measure heaping flour.
Then lastly, don’t over cook them. They should almost look doughy in the center and crisp on the outside!
Making a Heart Template
I start by grabbing the aluminum foil.
Pull out a long piece of foil and cut it in half.
Fold the aluminum foil over length wise.
Continue folding until it is in one long strip.
Now fold the ends together and shape into a heart.
Spoon the cookie dough into the heart shapes.
Spread the cookie dough by pressing it down evenly.
Bake as directed for normal chocolate chip cookies….however, you will need to cook them longer depending on how thick you make them. My best advice is just to keep a close eye on them.
Once you bake the hearts, let them cool and then pull off the foil.
Decorating the Heart Cookies
To start, I whip up some buttercream frosting and grab a few frosting bags, couplers and tips. Here is a small disclaimer…I was packing to go out of town the same night I was decorating these…so my designs are not favorite, but I needed to get them done quickly. I even let my girls tell me what they wanted on their cookies.
Anyways, Lauryn help me pick the colors and I added the icing color to the frosting.
Next I put a border around the heart shape.
Then I added a few roses, hearts and dots.
These cookies are so much fun to make and delicious! The perfect combo for Valentine’s Day. Thanks for checking out my post.
