Small Bedroom Closet Makeover

Small Bedroom Closet Makeover

For some reason I always neglect the bedroom closets in our house.  I never paint them, occasionally I organize them…but overall they are sad looking and in desperate need of a little TLC.  About 6 months ago we bought a new bed for my son.  He was 9 at the time and the cheap twin mattress we had bought him when he was 4, had served its time.

Even though his room is not huge, we decided on a queen bed.  So what does this have to do with the closet makeover?  Well, we wanted to get rid of his dresser and reorganize his closet to make room for his clothes.  His closet was pretty much filled with toys and paper at this point, so there was definitely room!

Adding A Little TLC

I just recently painted his room gray (I’ll post his entire room makeover soon!)  and so I wanted to paint the inside of his closet gray too.  Several areas of the textured walls had been scraped off, so it was nice to add a fresh coat of paint in the closet.

The shelves still stuck out like a sore thumb.  I wasn’t sure at first if I wanted to paint them, or possibly wrap them in contact paper.  The darker walnut wood still looked pretty nice, so I wasn’t convinced about covering that area up.  Then I realized I had a stain about the same color as the dark walnut, so I decided to stain the lighter shelves!

I followed the instructions on the can.  I let the stain soak for about 10 minutes, then wiped it off with a rag.  You can adjust the time depending on how dark you would like the stain.

I let the stain dry overnight before setting anything on it.

Organizing!

My son’s closet is a very unique shape, since it is over a stairway.  I personally love it and always tease him that as soon as he is out of the house I’m turning his bedroom into my office!  The closet would be perfect!  However, for clothing it is a little different.  To utilize the space as a bedroom closet, I needed to buy some bins and drawers.

I bought these Navy Bins and White Bins from Target.

I also bought a couple three drawer storage bins.

These bins added so much function to the closet!  I easily fit all his clothes in the bins and it only took a few minutes to get everything organized.

His closet is no longer sad!!

It’s amazing what a little paint and some bins can do (The bottom blue bins are from IKEA)!
