The Key To Winter Decorations
One thing I love about winter decorations is the neutral color palette. It seems to give our homes that much needed simplicity and calm feeling after a busy holiday season. This year I needed that more than ever. Most of December was spent taking care of my son who was first recovering from surgery and then very sick with a terrible bacterial infection in his intestines.
Taking the Christmas decorations down this year felt more symbolic, like it was a break from all the stress of last month.
Plus I am ready for winter and the view of freshly fallen snow! I love how it glitters in the morning light. Winter gives us some of the most beautiful mornings, if only our decor could inspire us in the same way.
However, it can sometimes be tricky transitioning from Christmas to Winter. Trying to decide what to keep out and what to put away. Do the pine trees stay out, what about the snowman, Or does this look too much like Christmas?
Here are a few tips for decorating your house for winter!
The Key To Winter Decorations
1. Embrace Your Neutrals
With Christmas you have been serenaded with red from every angle, it might be good for a change. Try removing the red and sticking to neutrals for you winter decor. For example, at Christmas I had red berries stuck in with the branches…for winter I simply remove the berries for a more rustic look.
Choosing neutrals doesn’t doesn’t mean sticking to all cream, browns and grays. Have fun with it by adding soft blues and even greens.
Another beauty of neutrals is when Valentine’s comes along, you already have the perfect setting to add pops of pink and red. The same for St. Patrick’s Day…just add pops of green. Winter decor is so versatile and can be made to fit all the winter holidays.
2. Declutter
As I mentioned in my last post, January is the perfect time to declutter. Most of us have so many Christmas decorations, which is awesome….but winter is time to clear them out and simplify. The good thing is this happens somewhat naturally. I have yet to meet someone that has more winter decorations than Christmas! So you are already ahead. Embrace the clean and tidy feeling your house gives you as you declutter.
When you decorate for winter, remember to keep it simple. Leave space so items don’t feel cluttered. Use fewer items, but make a big impact by choosing antiques to display or items with special memories. You can never go wrong with personal touches.

3. Embrace Rustic and Cozy Touches
Bringing in a lot of natural elements is a great way to decorate for winter. Branches, pine cones, and birch logs are all great winter decorations. You can grab items from outside or repurpose some of your existing Christmas decorations (minus the red).
To save money, I always grab branches from outside to place in vases or jars. I also cut off some pine branches for my front porch. Winter decor doesn’t have to be expensive. The snow is so peaceful…so bring some of that feeling inside.
With all the rustic, you also need to add a little softness! Make sure to add some soft cozy blankets and throw pillows. Nothing says winter like snuggling up under a warm blanket.
4. Add Winter Printables
Printables are also perfect to add winter cheer around the house.
In our house, we love snow! Every winter we have big competition. My son races home from school to try and shovel the driveway before my husband gets home to snow blow. My husband loves to snow blow…so you see the predicament! Bring on the snow I guess, so everyone is happy!
I made a second printable for our stairway. It looks great with several winter pictures of our kids playing in the snow! I loved them so much, I wanted to make them available for you too.
